Umbra, a pioneering space technology company known for its vertical integration approach, has announced a significant milestone today. The company revealed that it has made more than $4 million worth of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data accessible to the public through its Open Data Program, which was initiated on March 15, 2023.
In less than a year since its inception, Umbra has already shared over 3,000 images with the public, surpassing the combined open data offerings of its two closest competitors by more than tenfold. This move underscores Umbra’s commitment to transparency and democratizing access to valuable satellite data.
Through Umbra’s Open Data Program, users can directly access the company’s extensive catalog of open data via platforms such as AWS and SkyFi. The SkyFi platform offers users a unique opportunity to explore landscapes and observe changes over time through an intuitive browsing experience.
Umbra’s SAR data has covered over 1,000 locations, ranging from critical emergency response areas to picturesque landscapes. The Open Data Program also includes regular monitoring of more than 20 global locations, leveraging SAR’s unique capabilities for change detection. Users can utilize the data to track various phenomena, including deforestation, mining activities, agricultural developments, and more.
The release of this significant amount of SAR data marks a milestone in Umbra’s mission to empower researchers, policymakers, and the general public with valuable insights derived from satellite technology. As Umbra continues to expand its open data offerings, it aims to foster greater transparency and enable informed decision-making across various sectors.
